Antiviral Resistance Surveillance in Japan

Influenza Research Center, National Institute of Infectious Diseases

To support public health, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) and local Public Health Institutes conduct nationwide surveillance to detect antiviral-resistant influenza viruses.

This surveillance monitors resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir, zanamivir, peramivir, laninamivir), the cap-dependent endonuclease inhibitor baloxavir, and the M2 inhibitor amantadine.

Clinical specimens are collected from patients at sentinel sites and processed by Public Health Institutes. Approximately 10–15% of virus isolates are randomly selected and sent to NIID for detailed testing.
