Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI)

What is Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI)?

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is a clinical syndrome referring to acute upper respiratory tract infections (including rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, and laryngitis) or lower respiratory tract infections (including bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia) caused by a variety of pathogens. Conditions included under ARI include influenza, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, pharyngoconjunctival fever, group A streptococcal pharyngitis, and herpangina.

As of April 7, 2025, ARI has been classified as a Category V Infectious Diseases under the Infectious Diseases Control Law and is subject to sentinel surveillance.
